“Your chances of success in any undertaking can always be measured by your belief in yourself.” — Robert Collier
Our brains are powerful machines that we can use to create the kind of lives we want for ourselves. However, they rely on the input we give them in order to create this life for us. The stories we tell ourselves become self-beliefs that either limit us or spur us on. How you think and feel about yourself determines your chances of success or failure in life. If you believe that you were born to succeed, you will do anything within your abilities to succeed, and the world will conspire to bring you success. If you believe that you were born to be a failure, the world will similarly conspire to bring you failure.
No matter the situation you are in, you should realize that no one was born to be a failure. You can change your life by simply changing your thoughts and beliefs. Below are 3 ways you can bolster your self belief and set yourself on the path to success.
Remember your self image is not permanent
The image you hold about yourself was formed gradually based on your experiences, things you tell yourself and things others tell yourself about you. You could have had an embarrassing moment while speaking in public and told yourself that you are no good at speaking in front of people. This kept you from attempting to speak in public, further cementing your negative self belief. However, your self image is not set in stone. You can change it! Examine all the limiting ideas you have about yourself. Challenge them and give yourself affirmative thoughts instead. Focus on your positive side and what you are good at. Visualize yourself as a success. Since the subconscious mind cannot tell reality from imagination, doing this will change your self image to a more positive one.
Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
The quickest way to way to hurt your self belief is by comparing yourself to others. In life, there will always be people ahead of you and others behind you. Maybe someone graduated from the same class with you and is now the CEO of some big company. This gives you feelings of inadequacy. It makes you feel like you are a failure. However, you don’t know what their life is like, what got them there. You should only compare you with yourself. Strive to be better that you were yesterday. Focus on how far you have come and congratulate yourself. This will give you the motivation to push further and will raise your boost your self belief.
Focus on taking action, not being perfect
Another great killer of our self belief is setting unrealistic goals and trying to be perfect. No one is perfect. Don’t expect to launch a business and hit a million dollars in sales during the first year. This keeps you from taking action because you will be afraid you won’t achieve your already unrealistic targets. When you do take action, you will rarely be satisfied with your achievements because you have not attained perfection. This makes you perceive yourself as a failure even when you have succeeded. It leads to negative thinking that reinforces your negative self belief. Instead of aiming for perfection, aim for good enough and understand that things seldom go as planned.
