3 Reasons Why Strategy is the Essence of Human Action

How does success develop out of an idea? Why are some people able to quickly adapt to changes while others wilt at the first sign of resistance? Strategy. Strategy is the essence of human action. Without a strategy it’s easy to get overwhelmed and lost. Strategy allows you to maximize luck. When you have a strategy you are better equipped to deal with setbacks.

Strategy Gives You Direction

We all have more options than we know what to do with. Many people never manage to find success simply because they don’t know where to start. There is no plan. They have no idea how their great idea will ever come to life. Most will never even get past the idea stage before giving up. Some will stumble around blindly, trying hundreds of different things, never sure if they are getting closer to their goal or not.

When you have a strategy you know what needs to be done. You wake up each morning knowing what steps you need to take to get you closer to your goal. You don’t waste time wondering what comes next. You spend your time making your dreams come true.

Strategy Makes Your Luck Count

Everyone goes through periods of good luck and bad luck. The question isn’t: Are you going to get a lucky break? The question is: Are you going to be ready when your lucky break finds you? When you have a strategy, you are better able to harness the good luck that comes your way. Strategy magnifies your good luck.

Operating without a strategy means that you may not even recognize a lucky break. You won’t be in the position to capitalize on it. Think about the history of Justin Bieber. Even if you hate him, there is no denying he is one of the most successful entertainers of the past ten years. He and his team had a strategy. His YouTube stardom wasn’t an accident; it was part of the plan. His getting discovered and signed required some lucky breaks, but because he had a plan he took those breaks and launched a career that has made him millions.

Strategy Helps You Adapt

Things will go wrong. If you have a strategy you don’t have to panic. It’s like having a life jacket. Even if you get dumped into the sea, you are still going to make your way back to the surface.

When things go wrong, you can examine the strategy and decide if you need to adapt. You can change course, without having to start all over again. If you don’t have a strategy, when you run into obstacles it is much harder to know what needs to happen next. It is much easier to quit.

A strategy gives you a way to rationally analyze your situation. It takes some of the emotion out of the process, increasing the chances of you making a better decision.

You know that without action, ideas are just wishes. But, unless you have a strategy, the only action you are taking on your idea is throwing pennies in the wishing well. Action is the essence of human action. Strategy is why some people eventually succeed and others eventually quit trying.
