What is stopping you from living the life you want? If you answered with anything except “myself” you have a serious problem. The only way to live the life you desire is to take ownership of yourself. If you do not own up to your mistakes and shortcomings, you will always be at the mercy of people and circumstances. If you want freedom, you must own yourself. Otherwise, you will always be subject to forces outside of your control.
You Are the Only Over Who Knows What’s Best for You
Society does a good job of teaching us to be dependent on others. Children are rightfully dependent on their parents for physical and emotional support. But, as children we also learn that we are expected to grow up and work for some company that will take care of us. Most people live a life of mind-numbing boredom working jobs they don’t love, or even hate, all because that is what is expected. Others have told us what is best for us.
However, there is only one person who knows what is best for you, and that is you. Until you take ownership of your own life and happiness, you are letting others take you wherever they want to go. You lack autonomy. If you want to have the freedom to live a life that gives you fulfillment, you need to stop letting events and other people tell you what you can and cannot do. Only you know what really makes you happy.
A Ship Can Only Have One Captain
Examine the choices you are making in your life right now. Are these really your choices or these the choices your teachers, parents, and society has made for you? When you just go along with what other people think is the right thing to do, you have no ownership of your own life.
It is like being on your own yacht, but having someone else choose everything about the voyage. A ship can only have one captain. Are you the captain of your own ship? If not, then you will continue to be at the mercy of other people and events. You will face setbacks because you aren’t in control. Life is happening to you.
But, when you take ownership of your decisions, your life is no longer passive. You are not the victim anymore. Things will still go wrong, but at least you will learn to avoid the same mistakes in the future. You will be able to go to bed each night knowing that you are in charge and that nothing will be able to stop you from living the kind of life you want.
Successful people are not victims. They are change agents. Successful people take their circumstances and twist them to their advantage.
What’s stopping you from living the life you want? The only correct answer is you. It’s time to get out of your own way and take ownership of your life.
